Deal alert: the 4K Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is now half price

Remember the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium? Sony’s enhanced version of the already perfectly good XZ2 was a brilliant handset at an, uh, optimistic price point. At £799, we wouldn’t (and didn’t) recommend it to anyone. But right now at Laptops Direct you can get the handset with a 4K screen for just £399 .

Now before we go any further, let me just level with you: 4K on a smartphone is silly. I’ve been quite upfront in the past that Sony is pushing magic beans here. Bluntly, you don’t have magic eyes, and neither does anybody else: on a 5.8in screen, you simply can’t tell the difference. And (presumably for battery reasons) 4K is locked down to only a handful of apps anyway. It’s a dud of a top-billed feature. But just because it has a pointless selling point, doesn’t mean the rest is worthless and in every other respect, the XZ2 Premium goes toe to toe with the best of them. It has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor in it, which means it’s as good as any phone of last year and phones with anything more advanced are only just beginning to emerge. On top of that, it has an extra 2GB of RAM over the vanilla XZ2, taking the total to 6GB. While the bundled 64GB of internal storage is probably fine for most people, you can whack in a 400GB microSD card too if you really want. Storage simply won’t be an issue. Another area it improves on the regular XZ2 is the camera, which is now a dual-array setup. The 19-megapixel, f/1.8 main camera is supported by a 12-megapixel secondary snapper for added depth. It’s a small, but significant improvement. There were certainly better options available when the Xperia XZ2 Premium was £799. At £399, it’s undercutting the OnePlus 6T, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and pretty much everything of similar premium specifications. If only a Sony will do, then do yourself a favour and buy one now.
