The best PlayStation VR bundles and deals in May 2022

As we get further into 2022 we can confirm that PlayStation VR deals are still impossible to find right now. Sony has announced that a new PSVR 2 model is on its way and so stock of the previous bundles has dwindled to almost nothing. The only retailer that has the current VR headset in stock is the PlayStation Direct store - but you have to pay full price.

These shortages do make sense when you consider the PSVR 2 is due soon: potentially later in 2022 but it could be as late as 2023. This "next-generation VR system" will be coming to PlayStation 5, as revealed in a recent blog post . We've now had our first look at the PSVR 2 design , too. There's a suggestion that the PSVR 2 pre-order date will be announced soon as well.

As for the new headset's features, you'll find a new VR controller that brings DualSense compatibility over to the virtual reality realm. Not only that, but a single cable will be able to connect the new PlayStation VR system to the console itself - so gone are the days of a half-hour setup process.

But if you really want the original PSVR right now, then the PS Direct Store is your only option. If you're on PS5 , though, we would encourage you to wait for the launch of the second generation of PSVR as the new tech will be worth the upgrade. There's also the option to go for one of the best Oculus Quest 2 deals instead if you really want to escape to the virtual realm. Our guide to all the cheap VR headset deals is also on hand if you want to spend a little less.

If you're looking for a console but don't want to wait for the next PS5 restock , you can also check out our PS4 bundle deals hub for where to buy the last generation hardware - know that it's mostly second-hand, though. You can also shop around for all the latest PS5 deals and cheap PS Plus deals .

PlayStation VR deals

The only retailer that has a PSVR headset in stock is the official PlayStation Direct store. Both the US and UK have different bundles and we've shared them below.

Are there any PlayStation VR bundles available?

The only PlayStation VR bundles available to buy in the US or the UK right now are at the PlayStation Direct store. You might also find the odd headset here or there, but stock has been wiped out since the end of last year. And while places like Walmart and Amazon might offer the headset, the price of a PSVR bundle from these retailers can reach up to $600. That's considerably over MSRP and not worth paying when the new PSVR 2 is on the way relatively soon.

Where to find the best PlayStation VR deals

While there may be little to no availability right now, we've got our eyes on a few retailers who might drop a deal out of the blue or are the ones to follow when PSVR 2 pre-orders go live after Sony announces a release date.

What about PlayStation VR 2?

Sony has now officially announced a second-generation PlayStation VR system that's designed for the PS5. We don't know everything about the new tech just yet, but over recent months the manufacturer has steadily revealed information about the graphical upgrades, the boost in processing power and more features that we will find in the new VR headset. Stick with our PlayStation VR 2 hub for all the latest news, specs and rumours.

While we know the new system won't be wireless, Sony has committed to abolishing that tangled mess of cables that came associated with the first generation. Instead, there will be a single wire connection between the PlayStation VR 2 and the PS5 console.

So when can we expect PSVR 2? Sony has made it clear that we shouldn't mark our calendars just yet. The new system isn't expected to hit the shelves until late 2022 or beyond, so it's a waiting game for more information. There is some industry chatter from insiders on Twitter, though, that suggests a full reveal and PSVR 2 pre-order date could be announced soon.

PlayStation VR 2 price

While we don't know for sure, the PlayStation VR 2 price is likely to fall within the same $399 / £399 range as its predecessor at launch. However, with plenty more content heading to the device over the next couple of years, we can reasonably expect that some bundles will add extra value to that price point as well.

PlayStation VR games

Keep an eye on this handy chart below as we'll update it with the latest prices for a wide range of PlayStation VR games should you wish to try a new experience on the existing tech.

PSVR Accessories

PS4 camera deals

It's crucial you buy a PS4 camera along with your VR headset if it's not already in the bundle, otherwise, it will not work . Don't pay more than the standard £45/$60 for the camera though.  Sony released an updated, rounder (see image above) model with a built-in TV-mount and there are deals included in the chart below. The older PS4 camera is also compatible with PlayStation VR. If there's nothing tempting below, maybe try for a new/preowned unit via eBay?

PlayStation Move controller deals

The PlayStation Move motion controllers are very much an optional purchase as not every game supports them. Many that do, also have options to use the standard DualShock 4 PS4 controller instead.

Move wands are now more readily available as stock of the original PSVR headset has declined. That means if you already own the last-gen VR headset and want to see what the Move controllers are all about then you can find a pair relatively easily.

We'd advise a little caution if you're considering pre-owned units, as the lack of use in recent years may have dulled the charge capacity of the battery compared to new controllers.

DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment prices

Sony has also released the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment: a small device that clips onto the back of your controller and adds two mappable buttons for extra control configurations. The device has been wildly popular, especially in the US, so stock is sometimes hard to find. Since the launch of the PS5, though, it's become a lot easier to buy one.

And that's about everything when it comes to the best PlayStation VR deals right now. As explained, the situation isn't exactly great considering the lack of cheap headsets available to buy, but if you've already got one you can find some accessories or games for less.

Those looking to get the tech will be best waiting for the PSVR 2 and we'll be on hand when that launches to bring you the cheapest prices right here.

Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox Series X update launches without key next-gen features

The next-gen update for Apex Legends is being rolled out today (March 29), launching the native PS5 and Xbox Series X version of Respawn’s battle royale shooter. While the patch introduces several new features, it’s left many fans disappointed for overlooking several key features of the next-gen hardware.

The update, which goes live on March 29, will let you play Apex Legends at 4K resolutions with HDR at 60 fps. It also adds higher resolution shadows and a greater level of detail to distances, meaning more objects on the screen will be rendered at a higher quality.

However, several features that can only be achieved on next-gen hardware aren’t included in the update, and will be rolled out in future patches, according to an official blog post .

Support for 120 fps will be introduced down the line, which means players who want to take advantage of their 120hz TVs or monitors for buttery smooth gameplay will have to wait. Similarly, support for the DualSense’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback will be coming later.

Unspecified “visual improvements” and the equally vague “audio improvements” will also be introduced in future updates. There’s nothing to suggest when these additional patches will release or how they’ll be staggered.

Xbox Series S users, however, won’t be able to enjoy all the new features. The console’s limited hardware will only support 60 fps and HDR, meaning you’ll need to grab an Xbox Series X to take full advantage of Apex Legends’ new options.

Players have been waiting a long time for the next-gen version of Apex Legends to launch. The meager offerings here, which don’t take full advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s powerful hardware, are likely to leave many fans underwhelmed. Until the full slate of features rolls out, there won’t be a huge difference between playing the game on next-gen consoles compared to the PS4 or Xbox One , which already run at a fairly reliable 60 fps.

This update launches alongside the Warriors Collection event, a two-week event that reintroduces the 9 vs. 9 game mode Control alongside changes to the Caustic Treatment area on King's Canyon, adds a new Arena map called Drop-Off, and introduces 24 new limited-time cosmetic items. Lots to dig into.

Here's why I'll probably never test the new and impressive OnePlus phone

The OnePlus Ace has, after weeks of teases, been unveiled. This is a mid-range Android phone with the headline feature of super-fast 150W charging, but with middling specs in other areas.

It's admittedly almost exactly the same phone as the Realme GT Neo 3, unveiled less than a month prior by OnePlus' sibling brand - but that's not why we're not going to be testing this phone out.

No, availability concerns mean we'll likely never be able to play around with this new OnePlus phone .

Can you buy the OnePlus Ace?

The OnePlus Ace was unveiled in a launch event in China, and when we see phones unveiled in the country, they rarely make it out globally.

Indeed, a spokesperson for OnePlus told us "We have no plans to share at the moment with regard to a European launch. However, OnePlus is always carefully keeping track of the market and, in close collaboration with our community, this may change in the future."

We requested comment in the US but didn't hear anything there. So, for now at least, it sounds like the OnePlus Ace will be pretty hard to buy outside of China.

Why can't you buy the OnePlus Ace outside China?

OnePlus isn't the only company to unveil phones that are exclusive to the huge China market. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, Vivo, Realme, Oppo and more have been known to do it in the past - it's a pretty standard practice, in fact.

But why? Well, brands generally don't make sweeping statements about the market like that, but the reason is likely a cocktail of a range of factors including preferences and tendencies in the market - all but one of those companies we listed above are based in the country. Remember that, outside the West, Apple's iPhones have a dramatically lower market share, and other brands rule the roost.

We see enough devices get China exclusivity (and sometimes India launches too) for this to be the norm. But it's slightly irking in the case of the OnePlus Ace.

Why the OnePlus Ace exclusivity is a surprise

The OnePlus Ace was first teased in February, at MWC 2022 (an annual smartphone convention). At the end of Oppo's keynote speech (Oppo and OnePlus merged in 2021), the company teased its 150W charging solution which would debut in a OnePlus phone.

This obviously turned out to be the OnePlus Ace. So why is the exclusivity a surprise? Well, because MWC 2022 takes place in Barcelona. In Spain. Which is decidedly not in China.

MWC is often used as a place for Chinese brands to launch phones in the West that already debuted in China. So when we hear about tech here, it's almost guaranteed that it'll come to Europe, and sometimes the US, too.

So, for the OnePlus Ace to only launch in China is a surprise that bucks the trend.

A shame

The China exclusivity, which is commonplace in the phone industry, is a shame because it's usually cool and interesting phones that stay locked in the country.

The OnePlus Ace is a great example, as are foldables like the Oppo Find N and Honor Magic V .

Hopefully OnePlus will change its mind about the OnePlus Ace, so we can test its super-fast 150W charging in real life. Perhaps Realme will light a fire of competition under OnePlus, as the aforementioned GT Neo 3 has a much better chance of eventually reaching Europe (since the Neo 2 did).

One of the reasons that Apple launches inspire so much excitement is because you know the iPhones will go on sale in many regions around the world. That's not true for most other brands. You can only get excited for a Xiaomi launch so many times, before you start to realize most of their launches are only for China.

Hopefully, we don't see too many China-only launches. Otherwise, OnePlus buyers might lose interest in all of the company's launch events.
