Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint: News and release date

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, a sequel to 2017’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, was revealed during a Ubisoft live stream on 10 May. In it, Ubisoft provided a bevy of details for fans to pour over, from story details and release date to where it’s set and new gameplay features.

With all this information, we’ve put together a handy guide to tell you everything you need to know about Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint release date: When is it releasing?

We won’t have to wait too long, as the game is releasing later this year on 4 October for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Barring any delays, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint should be in players’ hands before the year is out.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint setting: Where will it be set?

Taking a departure from the cartel-controlled country of Bolivia we saw in Wildlands, Breakpoint will be set on the fictional Aurora Archipelago, located somewhere in the South Pacific. Aurora will house a diverse range of environments for players to explore.

From lush jungles and murky swamps to snow-capped mountain peaks and even the inside of a volcano, Aurora will come with that extra sprinkling of James Bond-style villainy. Speaking of villains, though…

Ghost Recon Breakpoint story: What will you be doing?

Playing as Nomad, the player character from Ghost Recon: Wildlands, you’re sent to Aurora for what seems to be a typical recon mission. Things quickly go awry, however, as your transport is destroyed and you find yourself stranded, soon pushed to your breaking point (the title of the game isn’t exactly subtle).

The island, where the drone-manufacturing company Skell Technology works out of, has been taken over by a group of rogue ex-US military personnel. Called the Wolves, the group is headed by former Ghost Recon operative, Colonel Cole D Walker (performed by Netflix’s The Punisher, Jon Bernthal).

Using the hardware produced by Skell Technology, the Wolves start hunting you down before you can find out why they’ve occupied the island and stop them from achieving their objective.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint gameplay: What will gameplay be like?

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint looks like a direct sequel to Wildlands, so fans of the previous game shouldn’t have to worry about any radical changes to the core gameplay. There are a few new features being introduced, however.

There’s now an injury system, meaning that when you get damaged, your character will have to treat the injury. If you don’t, the injury will continue to impede your character’s movement and combat abilities.

We might also be seeing the game take a step towards becoming a looter shooter, with enemies dropping loot, such as weapons, upon death. While this may seem like a surprise for the Ghost Recon series, Ubisoft often includes loot drops in its games these days, seen most recently in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and The Division 2.

Certain weapons, abilities and perks will be divided between the new character classes, meaning you can specialise your playthrough and even assign specific roles when playing with up to four other people. Some of these classes will favour certain styles of gameplay over others, such as stealth, action, the use of tech and so on.

Another addition is the ability to deploy an item, called a Bivouacs, which allows you to set up camp, change classes and manage your equipment and weapons. Setting up these camps across the island will also allow you to fast travel between them.

Breakpoint will also have new enemy variants. In order to hide from these enemies, you can choose to lie down in muddy puddles and camouflage yourself, allowing you to hide and escape from any pursuers.

Interestingly, dialogue options will also appear. It’s currently unclear what effect these options may have on the story, characters or world. Could we be seeing a gradual shift towards a more open-ended, wide-branching story with multiple endings, similar to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Ghost Recon Breakpoint endgame: What content will the endgame have?

More and more Ubisoft games are adopting the games-as-a-service model and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is no exception. Ubisoft announced that the game will have both endgame and post-launch content, in order to encourage people to play for longer.

As well as having endgame raids, new seasonal content will be added every four months, bringing with them new story content, weapons, gear and special events, as well as new missions, game modes and more raids. While raids are a new inclusion, Ghost Recon: Wildlands fans will be familiar with receiving regular content drops.
